Sounds like if there was ever a town in America that needed to be nuked, New Rome is it. I live an hour from Waldo and Lawtey Florida and I thought THEY were bad as AAA has called them the only speed traps in the US, but New Rome takes the cake.

Keith

Also. Don't be afraid to complain to the County in which New Rome resides. New Rome probably gets a lot of money from the county. Just like the county gets money from the state. And like the state gets money from the federal government. The 'chain of command' thing. Thanks. Chuck.

I would offer to ship the police force up to NY to show them what we think of corruption.  They can write it off as a feild trip.  I guarantee they will get an education.

Your police force are a collection of losers and scammers with no skills other than BFI (Brute Force and Ignorance)

They seem to be riding on the back of a hungry tiger, and I think they will end up inside it.

If I pass through New Rome I would not pay the ticket.

If noone did your officers would have no income since 90% of the funds go right into their pockets.  Don't let them bully you.  Post on your website and advise residents never to pay.  [We would, but they'll arrest you at work.]

You should also mount a campaign against these oficers to take back your home.  Become a nuisance [*snip* Whoa, getting a little carried away there.  Thanks]

Hello, I just saw 20/20 and I just wanted to wish all of you luck in hope that your site might change things in new rome. And I wanted to also say that that guy who did not think it sucks and he is on some board, anyway he needs a hair cut, and as I told barbara walters, his teeth deserve a "give me a break."

Good job on the site, and you guys have all the reason in the world to want to desintegrate that pathetic excuse of a "village". It's insane that a 3 block stretch can give people that many tickets for reasons that don't even exist, and I'm sorry for all the people who have had undergone awful experiences such as arrest, or getting cuffed, etc. for ridiculous charges.

I hope for everyone's sake in that region that that village does get desintegrated, and the whole council and cops should be ARRESTED for doing such horrible things. Where does the money go? I'm sure someone's going to do something about that sooner or later. I hope.

Oh, and 20/20 I'm sure was great publicity too, i bet, haha.. Good luck with everything!

Vicki

In Texas you can only derive a small percentage of your cities annual budget from traffic tickets, so maybe the state officals are partly to blame for not correcting this situation. The state has steped in  two times, that I know of, to correct this in some small towns near where I live. Just looks like the state could help if it wanted too.

Wow! thanks for sharing these stories guys, it makes me glad that i live in Tennessee, if i see New Rome i will be on foot. This iste makes me feel alot  better (no offense) about where i kive because i used to think that Knoxville had the rudest wannabe cops, If i didnt see this story on Fox News inever would have known about it.

Wow , this place makes our local speedtrap look like a drive - thru church! Langston , OK is infamous for their ticketing . I was driving through in my parents car and was pulled over for going 37 in a 35. ( I'm thinking tail-wind.. ) Well.. , New Rome is far worse than anything I've heard about Langston and kudos to you "guys" for taking a STAND in this wonderfully FREE , UNITED STATES of America! " To the fall of New Rome.."

Watched the television report on New Rome this evening and was completely beside myself at what I saw and heard.  I am frankly surprised that these cops haven't been kidnapped from their homes in the middle of the night, tar and feathered and tied to Main Street light posts buck naked by now.  What patience you all have.

I especially got a kick out of the long haired toothless wonder New Rome had stuck in front of the camera to speak in defence of this legalized theft ring.  I would dearly love to audit that loser's bank account.  His half sentences sprinkled with gramatically wonderous words like "ain't" convinced me and likely all viewers that this "Rhodes Scholar" is a classic Jeff Foxworthy typed hillbilly.

Thanks for warning me and all the viewers of the television article, as well as, this website about New Rome.  I will in all likelyhood never get there; but, if I do, I will park in the nearest town and take a taxi the rest of the way.

Good Luck ...

Please post this info for your readers. It is important inforormation that your or any other local government in any state do not want anyone too know.

If a motorist gets a ticket and feel they are wrongfuly accused, then go to court and plea thier case. If the judge hands down a fine or sentence and if they feel that it is not unreasonable, then they have the right to apeal it to the county then to the state for they live in.

If your guilty! your guilty, pay the ticket. If your not guilty! then your not guilty, then appeal it. Most generaly the local government will drop the charges to keep it from going to the county level or state level.

It is your choice, so make the right choice and put these law enforment officals in thier place.

Good luck and happy trails ahead.

I watched 20/20 tonight. I thought our little community was mismanaged, but what is going on in New Rome  is unconceivable. Sounds like the "Family" has a choke hold on the tax payers. This is kinda like the Mafia isn't it? Just out of curiosity....what is the population there and what is the main source of income? ( I know what it is for the Politicians..ha,) but I mean for the hard working honest folk. Lots of luck in your endeavors to right this wrong.

I enjoyed the story on 20/20.  Good luck on Tuesday with the vote!!!!

As a Canadian viewer of the show 20/20 this show on New Rome makes me ask many questions as it should you all.
Why are the citizens of Ohio not questioning the Ohio State Justice Minister for the lack of action taken against all officials of New Rome; is he corrupt too?
Why have no charges been filed years ago against all officials for crimes against tourists and locals as well as charges of corruption?
Property should be seized and people jailed for these actions as it is a crime against all people of Ohio right down to the small business man that looses revenue from tourist that are scared off travelling in Ohio.   Somebody wake up!
Questions have to be asked about the neighbouring law enforcement agencies  lack of action as they had to know what was going on; as its  now their reputation as Police Officers that is harmed; all the way up too Canada now. (Ignoring a crime in progress is a crime Officers).
Are the neighbouring Police corrupt too? Somebody investigate!
I will avoid Ohio in my travels just in case there are others in your state like New Rome'

Saw 20/20, and was interested in knowing how to contact others about a town called Florence Texas.  Florence is a town much like New Rome.  A small town that writes a lot of tickets to strangers passing through.  I received a ticket and was not even speeding -- OK, I was going about 47 in a 45 mph zone, but I received a the ticket for going 59 in a 45.  The worst thing about Florence is that the victims of the towns police force are mostly US Army soldiers traveling from Killeen, TX, Home of Ft Hood, TX the largest Army post in the world, to Austin, TX.  I started traveling through Florence about 8 months ago because my new career takes me to Austin.  Almost ever time I travel though Florence, the police there have someone pulled over.  I just received a my tickit this week. Since I received the ticket, I now travel 10-15 minutes out of the way through Belton Texas to avoid traveling through Florence.  If you still have a contact with 20/20, you should let them know that there should be a story on 20/20 about Florence Texas.  I think the name of the story about Florence would be "The #1 Reason to Travel Though or Stop in Florance Texas? Answer: to get a traffic ticket."

Thank You
Neal

Hello from West Texas,

I recently watched the news about your crooked little town and the scams that take place! I couldn't believe what goes on there. Sounds like you have a Major problem with the so-called-law enforcement. I feel for the people there. I am from a small town also and I have never had to deal with such bullsh*t. It sounds like the state of Ohio needs to shut it down before someone comes through and takes matters in to their own hands.

No one likes to be pulled over for a minor offense like what I have read on your web-site. I was shocked to hear that nothing has been done before now to correct this problem. I would be suing the piss out of those bastards if something like that happened here in Texas.

Is the woman, mother and grandfather suing the town of new rome for their run in with the law?  Why hasn't the state stepped in and taken over?

Everything I read makes me furious!! If I ever come to Ohio, I'll be sure to by-pass New Rome. It really hit home about the way the citizens of New Rome are being treated and I hope that this town is DISSOLVED!

If I were a resident of sucksville I would be the first to vote it off the map! You wouldn't have to ask me or my family twice!

Good Luck and We West Texans will be praying for you!

Sincerely,
Steve

Saw your story tonight on 20/20. Great site, feel sorry for those who live there. Maybe they will be gone Tuesday!! I'll check back.

Good luck,
Barry

well as a long time resident of the westside (35yrs +)i have known that new rome has always been a speed trap and a place u did not want to be.as far as im concerned i think its time to dissolve the village.it would bring in people again, businesses there would flourish, and it could be made nice again.and remember, rome wasnt built in a day, BUT NEW ROME CAN BE DISSOLVED IN ONE ! thanx for the site

Gil

Put the bastards in jail.  When its over lock them up.

Don't have a T.o.W for ya! But me and the boys down at work sure did enjoy reading about them shitfaces that are supposed to be the Law in that berg! Understand we was LOL at the so called Cops not at the poor people that have to put up with some of the Dumbest TrailerTrash we have ever heard of.

You people need to get them fools out of there.

Send them down here to Texas we have a place to put someone that Dumb. It's called Texas Dept of Correction's
They should not be cops they should be in jail for impersonating a law officer.

Big Tex.

I just watched the 20/20 episode and I can't believe that New Rome is writing all of those unlawful tickets.  If anything is criminal - it's what the Police force is doing to the public to raise cash for the city coffers.

I sincerely hope the public speaks up and something is done to put a stop to this illegal and harassing behaviour.

Thanks

Those clowns running this one horse town should have at least finished high school!

Kudos to ABC's 20/20 for bringing this to my attention.

What are these idiots going to do when the traffic dries up?  Duh!

PS Please forward this to the clown that "runs" the town.  Thanks

It was sad to see the 20/20 program tonight. I am a retired police officer of 21 years and now a federal agent with Homeland Security. Your councilman on 20/20 the no teeth long haired dude was a joke. The best thing the people of New Rome could do would be to vote to abolish the town. This way the state of Ohio would provide the revenue for the town and also the law enforcement. It is sad that now a days a town has to stoop this low to pay for it's police force. I wonder how many of your council members are on the take.

That  Gomer looking fool on 20/20, who probably is the town Crack Head, just needs a good old fashion ass wuuppin! He knows where the $$ at!

Thank you for all your hard work and educating America of the dishonesty in New Rome...

I am going to the Airstream Home Base.. I will now,  not take the New Rome route...
I will be spending my money at  stores along the way,  else where....

Danny

great story:  fight those bureaucrats (police)  till the end, run them out of town, they are not worth the badge they hide behind, and by all means,do not pay the ticket.. they only want your money to grab another burger and get fatter anyway...ha ha.
Joseph

I just saw the 20/20 piece it's sickening! I have a story but not about New Rome. I use to live in Fairfax Virginia and the police there would give you a ticket for going one mile above the speed limit. Or they would stop you for not having a front plate. I got to where whenever I drove my car I was like a radar for cops, I would constantly look in my rear view mirror, my side mirrors and ahead of me. It got to where I saw the cops long before I was even a blip on their "radar". No, Michael I did'nt need to buy a radar detector because I was a human radar detector. Not that I sped- I DID'NT! I was'nt parinod either, cuz in my mind I was being rational and my actions made perfect sense. Finally I got tired of this and moved to California in 1983 where I've been ever since. No one out here stops you if you go 10-20 miles over the speed limit. I have a theory about all this. Unfortunately the east coast is a cold place. An uptight place where the people will take anything. This is the reputation the east coast has in my mind. A place that is about control. I am glad I moved here. Thanks for creating this web site. I will continue to keep  posted. -Mark : )

I saw the piece on 20/20.  We have our own speed trap here in North Florida.  In fact our's is on AAA's lists of places to avoid.  The place is called Waldo, FL.  A former police officer from Waldo has penned a book about the shady operations of his former co-workers.  See his website and order his book here:  http://www.waldospeedtrap.com

I watched 20/20 tonight and then read through the stories at newromesucks.com

About all I can say is “Where’s RAMBO when you need him?”  No doubt it has that kind of effect of may who read about the “evil” that exists in the hearts of those in power there.  But the Lord says, Vengeance is mine.

And taking our concerns to this higher authority:

Lord, we ask that you deliver us from the evil that abounds in New Rome and we pray that an overwhelming majority decide, in local election, that the Village cease to exist!

This excuse for a corporation wants to hire ten more police officers? Assuming that the present force employes
at least two officers, and the population is about 48 adults, this would allow for a police officer for every four
adults. This would roughly amount to an officer for every family (based on an average family of four). That is
simply absurd.

New Rome is an example of how easily our democracy can be abused by the criminally-minded. We must be
ever vigilant in protecting ourselves from these kinds of abuses. Disband this mockery of a sham and teach
these clowns that this kind of crap will not be tolerated by upstanding citizens!
BTW, the spokesman for this so-called corporation is a perfect example of why first-cousins should not have
children. He looks like something only a mother would love (does HE have children?).

I saw the news story on 20/20 last night and I must admit that it was
quite an eye opener.  There are quite a few small towns like that here
in Texas, but nothing quite that extreme to be sure.
  Good luck with everything.

Saw 20/20 on New Rome! And you answered my question as to how to dissolve a 'corrupt' city. Not that I know of any, thank goodness! I'm right in the middle of helping a community (Olivehurst, Ca.) incorporate. They feel that they can do a lot better job than the county (Yuba County, Ca.) run things. And they're right. Here in Sacramento County, we've had several communities incorporate in the last few years. What I was surprised about, was that I couldn't find hardly anything on City Incorporation on the Net. It's mostly Business Incorporation that comes up. Thanks. Charles

What an outrage!

This is ridiculous and should not be tolerated in America.

Everyone reading this story who is mad as hell should phone the Chief of Police Mr. Larry Cunningham.

Express your feelings concerning their blatant misuse of power!

Paul
